The hit machines in Savage Garden are afraid to become too popular!
If we become big as Michael Jackson, do we quit immediately!
Savage Garden from Australia seems to have created a debut album that never gets too old. Even though it was released over a year ago, does it find new listeners all the time. And it spit out hit after hit! We met Darren and Daniel when they visited Stockholm a couple of weeks ago.

Now when you have conquered America, which's not the easiest. Savage Garden has hot days right now....
Daniel: --We are really happy. America is a hard tune to break for every artist from other countries too not only Australia. But we belong to a little lump that'd succeeded. To make a hit in USA is a little of every artist's dream.
Darren: — It's thanks to the radio that started to play us that everything has gone so well for us. Without their support had it been impossible. We have actually done very little press jobs in USA. We have met you a couple of times, ha ha.
Australians are a little like Swedish as a matter of fact. You stand with both of your feet on the ground. But in USA do they love to butter up for the stars with passing back pats, glitter and glamour. How do you manage things like that?
Darren: — We joke a little about it I guess....
Daniel: — Americans can make one so tired with their enthusiasm. When you're a little, like us, tired and soft and rather keep a low profile, can it be quite rough. They like it like the stars behave like the Stars. And we're not.
Darren: — We are kind of scared sometimes for the success. We are grateful, but we don't want to be so big so we can't go out without lifeguards.
Daniel: — No, if that day comes I rather quit. I saw Michael Jackson wave from a hotel window once. I just laughed at the misery. He's in a jail that he'd built all by himself. I would never ever make a change with him for anything in the world.
Darren: — Or the Spice Girls by the way. It's not healthy to be that popular. We want something to fight for. If you're on the top- what the hell do you do then?
Have you started to think about the next album?
Darren: - Yes, but first now have I started to think about it like something that will happen. We have been buissy with tours and promotions that it has become a big confusion of everything. Now do we see the end of the first album. The end of the tour. The beginning of something new.
Daniel: - It will be exiting to do a new album. If we're afraid to flop? No, not at all. If we are satisfied is it successful. Only the thought that we have the possibility to make a new album is a reward. I don't think we'll do something we couldn't have done the last time. But of course do we have more access to more technical effects. But first of all do we know what we don't want to do. At the first album did we just let the fantasy flow. We filled a washing machine with our enthusiasm and hit the button. That's why the album is so rich and full of variety.
Darren: — One important difference is that now, do we have a task of doing. People expect something new from us. But the biggest press on us is to do an album that we like ourselves. To not compromise.
With millions sold albums, is it hard to get on the carrousel of fame?
You were just a couple of guys before who hardly had your dinners in fancy restaurants and lived at luxury hotels. Is it possible to adjust oneself for a life in luxury?
Daniel: — No you can't prepare yourself for it. You'll never know what will happen. I guess I was a little impressed of celebrity's earlier. If I bumped into some local celebrity did I react. But you get immune after a while. Now do we meet celebrity's all the time and doesn't even notice about it. You become almost indifferent.
Darren: - Yesterday did I ask my tour leader of help to wash my clothes. I just hadn't had time myself and we live at a hotel one night at the time so the clothes never have time to dry. I've never asked him to help me in about a year, but this time I had too. You don't need to be ashamed of asking help from others. We all have the same goal. We are presidents in our own country - and all presidents have their own assistants. They aren't any slaves!!!! Ok we are spoiled all artists are. But you take that for granted after a while.
But when you come home again - is everything like before then?
Daniel: - Ah, we look forward to live normal again. That's something that makes us exited. Honestly! In the end is it almost embarrassing that people runs after the teacup for you. The independent is stolen.
Darren: - it's not us who wants people to hold up the doors for us and fetch things for us. They do it anyway and all you can do is sigh and let it happen. You have to give your freedom away and your independence. You can't discuss that either you like it or not every time. If you did, you never get anything done. The artist world is full of weird things and all the back pats, do you have to take with a grain of salt. We were at a big Award-party I Hollywood and everyone was there. The celebrity's patted my behind... and I liked it! Our manager came to me and said a thing that made me think: ""They never love you as much as you think. But when your career fade doesn't they hate you as much you think either." If you realise that you're somewhere in the middle, you survive!

A big thanks to Mona for the translations
